We work with some brilliant people at Cooper Parry Wealth.
Clients, of course. Colleagues too. And in this, the first edition of our Spotlight series, we sat down with Angus Trimble, Paraplanner, to find out more about him, his journey, and what brought him to CPW.
WHY COOPER PARRY WEALTH?
“Whether it’s CPW’s distinctive branding or being greeted by Pablo, the life-sized grass bull at our Sky View office, it doesn’t take long to notice CPW stands out against the comparatively bland backdrop of financial services.
Behind the image, I learned through my interview process and discussions with peers in the profession that CPW comprises a culture of inclusivity and drive – not just to be different, but to be one of the best at providing full financial planning.
I was also aware I was joining at a time when the business was embarking on an exciting growth trajectory, as shown by the multiple acquisitions. Whilst the growth brings excitement and ambition, I knew from a personal perspective it would provide opportunities to develop.”
HOW DID YOU KICKSTART YOUR CAREER?
“Although I’d enjoyed my previous roles in business development, I knew I wanted to make the switch into the career of a financial planner. I began by taking the initiative to contact wealth management firms directly and speaking with people across the profession to determine the most suitable way for me to transition into a new successful career.
Looking back, having a direct approach and being open with my ambitions opened the door to so many helpful conversations and eventually led me to CPW.
I also immediately began sitting the CII exams to reach diploma level qualification. It’s fair to say the first year and a half of my time has been consumed by progressing through my CII exams. Whilst passing exams alone won’t determine my success, they are a necessity in the profession and have provided the foundation to build my technical knowledge. I’ve learned the most from my peers, specifically within the CPW Paraplanning team.
I’m very inquisitive too, which has helped. Wealth management and the psychology of finance has always interested me, and I believe it’s been important for me to consistently show a desire to learn more whether through books, seminars, podcasts or documentaries. Retaining a passion for what you do will always help you stand out.”
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR ROLE?
“Everyday in paraplanning you’re met with problems to solve. Each client plan is unique. It’s never a case of copy and paste and onto the next one and I enjoy the challenge of working together on a solution.
We also get to see first-hand the impact a sound financial plan can have on a family.
Financial planning starts with identifying what people want to achieve, how they want to support their families, what’s on their bucket list and why. This can naturally lead to conversations which are emotional, and I believe we are in a privileged position to be a part of that process. I also get to do this alongside different relationship managers at CPW which helps my development and builds my experience.
Also…I hate myself for getting the cliché in but I genuinely get to work with great, intelligent, fun people!”
WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
“I plan on riding the Scotland North-Coast 500 on motorbikes with a couple of friends. I picked up my motorbike a couple of years ago, now I just need to make some friends.
I’d love to do an Iron Man Triathlon too – 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle, 26.2 mile run, beer. It will near enough kill me but I’d love to complete this one day.
Going travelling for a couple of months across Japan and South Korea is another, slightly less gruelling goal. My wife and I recently welcomed our first child, Kasper, into our lives, and I can’t wait to share some incredible experiences with him.”
